A Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) is a document from Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) that looks at how hiring a foreign worker will affect the Canadian job market. If the LMIA is positive, it means no Canadian citizen or permanent resident is available to do the job, so the employer can go ahead and hire a foreign worker. If the LMIA is negative, it indicates that a Canadian citizen or permanent resident should fill the position instead.
It is possible to hire a foreign worker who is exempt from needing an LMIA, or who is exempt from requiring a work permit. Unlock Employment in Canada
All streams of Canada's Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) require employers to obtain an LMIA to hire workers from outside Canada.
An LMIA can add up to 600 points to an Express Entry profile, greatly increasing the chance of approval in the next draw.
The job titles that are generally in demand in Canada require a LMIA vary by sector and area. IT professionals, healthcare professionals, skilled trades workers, engineers, hospitality and tourism professionals, sales and customer service representatives, financial professionals, teachers and professors, agricultural workers, and transportation workers are among the most common occupations requiring an LMIA.
